A profound idea in this course is that in order to really understand human brain function, you need to reconstruct a human being. To clarify any brain function such as sensation, movement, communication, emotion or language we take the viewpoint of information processing and integrate experimental means like neurophysiology, psychology, brain imaging and robotics into a computational framework. Taking this approach, ATR is internationally recognized as a leading center for computational neuroscience, aiming at cutting edge research.

Our goal is to establish novel communication technology that directly connects the brain machines using decoded neural information. - Department of Brain Robot Interface
The goal of our study is to control an
exoskeleton and/or a humanoid robot using brain activity. - Decoded Neurofeedback
We developed the decoded neurofeedback (DecNef) method to lead brain activity to a target state. - Department of Qualia Structures
We aim to elucidate the relationship between qualia structure and information structure
- Department of Cognitive Neuroscience
Our objective is to clarify the cognitive and learning mechanisms using computational theories, psychological experiments and brain activity measurements. - Department of Dynamic Brain Imaging
We develop brain reading and feedback techniques focusing on the dynamic aspect of brain signals using large-scale computing. - Department of Neural Computation for Decision-making
We aim to elucidate the neural mechanisms of decision-making by computational approaches, and apply them to solve social, economic, and medical problems.

The goal of our research is to develop analysis tools to clarify human brain functions and communication techniques based on brain activities. - Department of AI-Brain Integration
We aim to induce co-evolution of brain and artificial intelligence (Al), hence leading to development of novel Al technologies that mimic brain functions.
